Craniosacral Therapy: Why You See Images in Sessions

The Experience: Seeing Wild Images During a Craniosacral Therapy Session

You sit up after your craniosacral session and think, "oh my god... what just happened? I just saw so many things."

From peaceful meadows to talking zebras. From an ancient medicine woman to a peach tree. A portal to some secret universal pocket in outerspace to a vacuum cleaner.

From person to person, the images that can appear during a session vary a lot! And, that's a very good thing. Because what images YOU see in your session may hold an important key in your body's healing process.

How the Nervous System Uses Imagery to Process Experience

When the nervous system begins to settle in a craniosacral session, many people naturally shift into a different channel of awareness—what Somatic Experiencing calls the imagery channel within the SIBAM model (Sensation, Image, Behavior, Affect, Meaning).

In this state, the body isn’t trying to analyze or figure things out. It’s processing. Images can arise spontaneously—symbolic, strange, beautiful, or completely unexpected—and they often reflect how the system is organizing and completing something that hasn’t fully moved through before.

How Meaning Forms in the Body After a Session

Meaning is one of the channels the nervous system uses to organize experience. After a session, some of those images could stay with you [they don't need to be 🤯 figured out] ...your system is naturally beginning to make sense of them in its own way.

We're not trying to force an interpretation. We notice: what did that image feel like in your body? Did anything shift, soften, or open as it appeared?

Each person’s meaning-making is unique. What matters is the connection between the image and your lived experience in the moment ...how your body responded, what feels different, what stayed with you.

There’s space after your session at Riverways Craniosacral Therapy to gently talk through anything that came up— to integrate before you walk out back into this crazy world. When we take time to reflect, sometimes things become a little clearer. Your felt sense of understanding has more spact to continue it's glorious unfolding.

P.S. Some folks don't operate on the "images" channel; so, if you simply drift off into that deep [deeeeeeep] place of rest and restoration, great. Savor it. Nestle into it. Your nervous system is doing some beautiful healing work ... just on a different frequency.

If this resonates, your body may already be asking for space to unwind.
